Bears Coach Grader

A funny thing happened recently where the laughable ineptitude of past Bears coaches came up, today, and every day, all the time because it's an overflowing well for which there is no bottom. However, folks are often surprised as just how much I hate Matt Nagy. "You hate Matt Nagy!?"     I do. So much. So, so much. "Wait, is it because he blatantly ignored the very obvious limitations with his QB and offense and, rather than even try to come up with a solution, or even improvement,  instead spent a whole offseason in a pants-shittingly insane frenzy over a kicker battle?"     It sure doesn't help! "And then the guy who won the battle, Eddie Pineiro, got injured, and they, out of duress, went to Cairo Santos, who ended up being one of the most accurate kickers in Bears history? So they effectively proved their kicker battle was a pointless waste of time, an embarrassment to the franchise, and also not even effective at finding the best kicker?...

Hope; or - Who's Allowed to Be Happy?

The Chicago Bears walked into the locker room at the end of their first game with Ben Johnson as head coach after a loss to an NFC rival in the final moments of the one-score game to thunderous boos echoing through Soldier Field. Fans left in droves even before the clock ran out, leaving the stadium and feeling of the game as worryingly hollow. The Chicago Bears walked into the locker room at the end of their final  game of the season with Ben Johnson as head coach after a loss to an NFC rival in the final moments of the one-score game to thunderous cheers echoing through Soldier Field. Fans stayed long after the clock ran out, entire sections giving a roaring standing ovation of appreciation, leaving the stadium, and the season, with a feeling of hope . But what makes this season so special, now that the lights are off and the door is shut, with the Bears' playoff wins over the past 15 years going from 0 to just 1? How did a fanbase go from booing their head coach in his fi...

BWF Pod Week 18: Bears 16, Lions 19 - It Was Always Going to Come to This

Fuck You, Taking a Punter in the 4th Was Good Process

Image
At this point basically everyone on earth who cares about the Bears enough to know who Tory Taylor is is also mad about him. "The Bears wasted a 4th round pick" is the rallying cry of basically everybody from  reddit , to Forbes writing him off as "just another punter" , to PFF giving our golden Aussie a bottom-6 grade for most of the season. Even beloved BWF-endorsed stats warlock Jonathan Wood labeled him as a " massive bust ": And even conversations among the most deranged of Bears fans have resulted in messages like this: Now, while I'm not gonna sit here and pretend like Tory Taylor's stats are lying and he actually is the secret best punter in NFL history, I am gonna comment on the pervasive talking point that taking a punter in the fourth round at all was an indefensible misuse of draft capital. Because it wasn't. It isn't. Taking a punter in the fourth round is a perfectly reasonable use of draft capital if he's a top tier pun...

BWF Pod Week 17: Bears 38, 49ers 41 - Two Good Playoff Teams

Your beloved hosts Coach Bob and Patrick discuss the odd peace fans are feeling as NFC North Champions after the loss against one of the best offenses in the NFL. Caleb is clearly A Guy, the Bears are clearly a perennial playoff team, and Collinsworth is clearly in need of taking his Mahomes magazine away from the broadcast booth. Will the loss affect the playoff seeding? Will the offense be healthy going into them? Will your hosts holiday broadcast after a near-lethal amount of eggnog make up for the terrible audio quality? Find out this time on BEAR WEATHER FANS

Bears Beat Writers vs Basic Competency at their Jobs: A War for the Ages

Last week, there was a whole bunch of talk about time to throw ("TTT") as a stat, of course in the context of Caleb Williams, of course also in bad faith. I made the wild claim on the podcast back when the season started that none of this was in good faith - the ranking of Caleb Williams as the 32nd best starting QB in the NFL (behind JJ McCarthy, a man whose entire NFL resume is tearing his ACL and putting on way too much eyeblack while he recovered), the claiming that Caleb was more of a scrambling QB than a pocket passer, the idea that he was already considered a bust - all of it, I was sure, was in bad faith. A performative dance from national media ball-knowers who understood the game, and understood that to drive clicks, the most surefire play to call was one that involved rage-baiting Bears fans with obvious bullshit, and watching the biggest fanbase in American sports media lose their goddam minds. I was wrong . Assuming the idiocy was intentional, planned, the work o...
