Bears Beat Writers vs Basic Competency at their Jobs: A War for the Ages

Image
Last week, there was a whole bunch of talk about time to throw ("TTT") as a stat, of course in the context of Caleb Williams, of course also in bad faith. I made the wild claim on the podcast back when the season started that none of this was in good faith - the ranking of Caleb Williams as the 32nd best starting QB in the NFL (behind JJ McCarthy, a man whose entire NFL resume is tearing his ACL and putting on way too much eyeblack while he recovered), the claiming that Caleb was more of a scrambling QB than a pocket passer, the idea that he was already considered a bust - all of it, I was sure, was in bad faith. A performative dance from national media ball-knowers who understood the game, and understood that to drive clicks, the most surefire play to call was one that involved rage-baiting Bears fans with obvious bullshit, and watching the biggest fanbase in American sports media lose their goddam minds. I was wrong . Assuming the idiocy was intentional, planned, the work o...

A Quick Compare & Contrast on Coaching Re: Interceptions - Good vs Bad

Beloved hosts of the BWF Podcast, Patrick & Coach Bob, discussed one of the many ( many ) staggering differences between how the current coaching staff coaches towards the finer points of the game - re, interceptions - and the old staff. But don't take their word for it! (Actually do, they're flawless), but here:

A Quarter of the Season in, Which Quarter is Caleb In?

We're at the (comically early) bye week! And seeing as the number one concern going into this season was how Caleb Williams could handle Ben Johnson's offense - ("can he play in structure? can he throw on time and, god willing, with anticipation instead of holding the ball and going into creation mode? can he stop taking so many goddamn sacks?"), let's go ahead and check on where Caleb's progress is at. Serious question - how would you measure a QB's success in avoiding negative plays? "Look at the tape!" the tape says whatever you want it to, if ESPN is to be believed, and anybody who comes away with a different conclusion than Colin Cowherd is apparently a hopeless homer soaked in idiocy and Malört ("aren't those synonyms?" heh, good one ). How about we keep it simple — total number of sacks, divided by total number of attempted passing snaps (Sk/(ATT + Sk):  2025 Sack Rate by QB (Through Week 4) "Well, that's all well a...

Yes, I was Tyler Dunne's Source for the Caleb Williams Story, But You Weren't Given the Context

By now, most of you are probably aware of the Tyler Dunne article series about the Caleb Williams drama last season that’s taken Chicago Media by storm: House of Dysfunction, Part I: The Curious Case of Caleb Williams , as well as  House of Dysfunction, Part II: Inside the Chicago Bears' "rigged trial" at No. 1 overall .  To all the readers, fans, and heartbroken supporters of Caleb Williams who’ve been affected by the frankly stunning series of scandals revealed by Tyler’s article and its anonymous source, I have an apology, and a confession; The anonymous source of Tyler Dunne’s article series— — was me . “Patrick, you’ve written some of the most important journalism in Chicago Bears history ! You run the only Bears podcast ! How could you sell out your team like that? Your integrity? Your millions of fans?” That’s why I had to get this out there - I’ve received so many messages of concern and disappointment from our millions of Bear Weather Fans… fans all over the glo...
